**Balu Raghuram & Aparna Raghuram at MANMF MESK – 30 August 2026**

Violin: Balu Raghuram & Aparna Raghuram

Mridangam: B. Praveen

Ghatam: Omkar Rao

A polished violin duet that showcased clean coordination, shared imagination and a well-curated selection of kritis. The siblings maintained excellent sruti alignment and balanced the roles of lead and support fluidly throughout the evening.

The concert opened with T.R. Subramaniam’s Vanajākṣa in Behag (Adi). The piece was rendered with a bright, flowing gait; the characteristic phrases of Behag were brought out clearly in both the kriti and the brief improvisatory passages that followed.

Tyagaraja’s Brōva bhāramā in Bahudāri (Dēśādi) received a short but effective alapana. The raga’s gentle contours were sketched with care before the kriti. Swarakalpana was crisp and well-synchronised between the two violins, with neat korvais.

The centrepiece of the early half was Syama Sastri’s Ambā Kāmākṣi swarajati in Bhairavi (Miśra Cāpu). Taken with the traditional weight and dignity, the composition allowed the duo to display both melodic depth and rhythmic precision. The successive caranams were handled with clarity; the swara passages that followed were measured and tasteful.

Hamsadhvani returned with Tyagaraja’s Raghunāyaka nī pādha yuga (Dēśādi). A brief alapana highlighted the raga’s sparkling nature. Swara exchanges were lively and imaginative, the two violins engaging in quick, well-matched phrases.

Śrīranjani followed with Sogasugā mṛdanga tāḷamu (Rūpaka, Tyagaraja). The alapana was compact yet evocative; the kriti’s rhythmic play was brought out effectively, and the short swara section retained the raga’s characteristic charm.

Ravicandrikā’s Niravadhi sukhada (Adi, Tyagaraja) provided a bright interlude before the main suite.

The major item of the evening was Dikshitar’s Śrī Kāntīmatim in Hēmavati (Simhavaram, Adi). The alapana was expansive and carefully structured—phrases unfolded with good sense of proportion, the two violins alternating and blending seamlessly. Neraval at the traditional place was detailed and bhava-oriented. The ensuing swarakalpana was vigorous and well-knit, culminating in strong korvais. The tani āvartanam by B. Praveen and Omkar Rao was energetic and well-coordinated—solid sollus, clear interplay and a satisfying climax that rounded off the main suite on a high note.

Post-tani, U. Srinivas & U. Rajesh’s Sangamam in Kīravāṇi (Adi) offered a contemporary touch while remaining firmly classical in treatment. The tillana in Karṇaranjani (Adi, Ganesh-Kumaresh) was rendered with precision and sparkle. The concert closed with the customary Nī nāma rūpamulaku mangalam in Saurāṣṭra (Tyagaraja).

Bangalore Praveen provided intelligent, supportive mridangam accompaniment throughout, rising to the occasion in the tani and during the faster swara passages. Omkar Rao on the ghatam added colour and rhythmic clarity, especially in the exchanges and the tani.

Overall aesthetic: classical, well-proportioned and free of excess. The duo’s synchrony, clean bowing and shared manodharma ensured a satisfying evening of violin music.

A Musical Journey from Kadanakutuhala to Arunachala

Some concerts are remembered for a spectacular centerpiece, some for a particularly memorable raga, and some for the sheer virtuosity of the musicians. There are also concerts that remain in the mind because of the way the entire evening unfolds. The concert by Ramana Balachandra, accompanied by Bangalore V. Praveen and Guruprasanna, was one such experience—a thoughtfully structured musical journey that moved gracefully between the majesty of traditional Carnatic repertoire and the intimacy of devotional music.

The programme had an admirable sense of progression. Beginning with a Kadanakutuhala varnam, it travelled through Ritigaula, Calanata, Saveri, Kapinarayani and Mohanakalyani before gradually turning towards the devotional world of Ahirbhairav, Pahadi and finally a raga-malika setting of Arunachala Siva Aksharamanamalai. The result was a concert that seemed to expand and contract in mood, moving from the formal architecture of the kriti to the expansive freedom of raga and tani, and finally towards contemplation and bhakti.

The opening “Sharanagata Vatsale” in Kadanakutuhala, an Adi tala varnam by Calcutta K. S. Krishnamurti, was an energetic and purposeful beginning. Kadanakutuhala is naturally vivacious, and a varnam in this raga is well suited to setting the pulse of the concert. The opening item immediately placed the evening within a recognisably classical framework, while the choice of a composition that is not among the most routinely heard varnam selections gave the programme an individual character right from the outset.

The concert then moved into one of the most beautiful early contrasts of the evening—Tyagaraja's “Dwaitamu Sukhamā” in Ritigaula, set to Adi tala, with alapana and swara passages. Ritigaula is a raga of extraordinary depth. Its beauty is not loud or demonstrative; it emerges through its characteristic turns, delicate oscillations and unmistakable emotional personality. Following the brisk Kadanakutuhala opening with Ritigaula created a lovely change of temperature.

The inclusion of alapana and swara also meant that the raga was given room to breathe beyond the confines of the composition. This is an important feature in concert programming: a raga becomes a living musical personality when the musician is allowed to explore it rather than merely render a kriti within it. Ritigaula, in particular, rewards such exploration.

Next came Koteswara Iyer's “Edayya Gati” in Calanata, set to Adi tala. The appearance of Calanata at this point was another refreshing change of colour. Koteswara Iyer's compositions provide an opportunity to move beyond the most frequently traversed Tyagaraja–Dikshitar–Syama Sastri repertoire, and the inclusion of this kriti contributed to the distinctive character of the programme.

The concert then entered one of its major early stretches with Tyagaraja's “Tulasi Jagajjanani Duritapaharini” in Saveri, set to Rupaka tala, presented with alapana, neraval and swara. Saveri is one of those foundational ragas in which the weight of tradition is immediately perceptible. Its personality is unmistakable, and its emotional range can be profound without requiring excessive embellishment.

The progression from Ritigaula to Calanata and then Saveri made for a fascinating sequence. Each raga possessed a strongly individual identity, and the programme was clearly not interested in staying within one particular emotional or melodic zone for too long. The alapana gave Saveri its own independent space, while the subsequent kriti brought the raga into the compositional world of Tyagaraja. The addition of neraval and swara further expanded the treatment, making this one of the substantial musical landmarks before the main RTP.

Another interesting choice followed with Tyagaraja's “Sarasa Sama Dana Bheda” in Kapinarayani. Kapinarayani is not a raga one encounters in every concert, and its inclusion was one of the programme's particularly attractive features. There is a certain joy in hearing a musician move into less frequently visited territory, especially when such a raga is placed alongside familiar stalwarts like Ritigaula and Saveri.

Then came the central presentation of the evening: the Raga-Tana-Pallavi in Mohanakalyani, set to Chaturasra Triputa tala, two-kalai. This was naturally the point around which the concert acquired its greatest structural weight.

Mohanakalyani is a fascinating raga because of the way it combines the familiar luminosity of Mohanam with the additional melodic possibilities associated with Kalyani. It can be graceful, expansive and highly evocative. Choosing Mohanakalyani for the RTP was therefore an inspired departure from the more predictable choices one might expect for a central pallavi.

The very nature of an RTP provides a different kind of musical experience. It allows the musician to move beyond the boundaries of a fixed composition and engage with raga, rhythm and imagination as interconnected dimensions. The choice of two-kalai Chaturasra Triputa also gives the pallavi a substantial rhythmic canvas. After the succession of kritis earlier in the concert, this was the natural point at which the evening could open out fully.

The percussion component was equally important in this architecture. Bangalore V. Praveen and Guruprasanna brought the mridangam and kanjira voices into the rhythmic fabric of the concert. Their presence ensured that the rhythmic dimension had both weight and colour, particularly as the concert moved towards the central pallavi and its associated rhythmic elaboration.

After the RTP, the atmosphere began to change perceptibly. The programme moved into “Pibare Rama Rasam” in Ahirbhairav, a composition of Sadashiva Brahmendra set to Adi tala. This was an excellent post-RTP choice. Ahirbhairav carries a contemplative quality, and Sadashiva Brahmendra's composition naturally belongs to a more inward devotional space.

The shift from Mohanakalyani to Ahirbhairav represented more than a simple change of raga. It felt like a transition from the intellectual and structural concentration of the RTP towards the emotional simplicity of bhakti. This kind of post-RTP relaxation is one of the pleasures of a well-planned concert.

The subsequent “Nine Gati Nine Mati” continued this lighter, devotional portion of the programme. The concert was now gradually shedding the formal weight accumulated through the main classical section.

Then came the Mirabai bhajan “Payoji Maine” in Pahadi. Pahadi is ideally suited to this kind of transition. Its folk-like accessibility and gentle melodic charm allow the listener to move effortlessly from the sophistication of the Carnatic concert format into the direct emotional language of the bhajan.

The final item, “Arunachala Siva Aksharamanamalai” in ragamalika, provided a deeply evocative conclusion. The choice of Ramana Maharshi's celebrated devotional text associated with Arunachala was especially appropriate as a concluding offering. After travelling through the formal and expansive dimensions of Carnatic music, the concert ended by embracing a more meditative and devotional aesthetic.

The entire programme can therefore be viewed almost as a carefully constructed arc. Kadanakutuhala supplied the youthful energy of the opening; Ritigaula brought depth; Calanata added an element of discovery; Saveri provided gravitas; Kapinarayani expanded the repertoire's colour; and Mohanakalyani became the central expansive canvas. From there, Ahirbhairav, Pahadi and finally the Arunachala Siva Aksharamanamalai gradually turned the concert inward.

What I particularly appreciated was the balance between scholarship and accessibility. The programme clearly had enough substance for the serious rasika—the less frequently heard compositions, the substantial raga treatments and the RTP ensured that—but it did not remain intellectually demanding throughout. The later devotional pieces opened another door into the music, allowing the concert to conclude on a more intimate and contemplative note.

That balance is not easy to achieve.

A concert can become overly cerebral if every item is chosen primarily for novelty or technical possibilities. Conversely, an excessive dependence on familiar devotional pieces can make the latter half predictable. Here, the two worlds complemented each other. The classical core gave the concert its depth, while the devotional concluding sequence gave it warmth.

The contribution of the accompanying musicians also deserves appreciation. A vocalist's imagination can truly flourish only when the accompanists are listening deeply and responding with sensitivity. The combination of Bangalore V. Praveen and Guruprasanna provided the rhythmic foundation for the concert, while the musical dialogue within the ensemble would have been particularly important in a programme that moved from kriti-based presentation to raga exploration and an RTP.

What makes a concert memorable, ultimately, is not simply the number of difficult passages or the length of the main item. It is the feeling that the musicians have taken the audience somewhere. This concert certainly had that quality.

The programme offered variety without fragmentation, depth without heaviness, virtuosity without exhibitionism, and devotion without sentimentality. It allowed the listener to appreciate Carnatic music in several dimensions—its grammar, its improvisational freedom, its rhythmic architecture, its poetry and finally its capacity for contemplation.

The concluding Arunachala Siva Aksharamanamalai was therefore more than a final item. It served as the final brushstroke on the musical canvas. After the energy of the varnam, the exploration of Ritigaula and Saveri, the expansive Mohanakalyani RTP and the rhythmic dimensions of the concert, the music finally arrived at a place of surrender.

And perhaps that is the most satisfying way for a Carnatic concert to end—not with the feeling that the programme has merely been completed, but with the sense that the listener has travelled through something meaningful.

Ramana Balachandra, Bangalore V. Praveen and Guruprasanna presented a richly conceived concert that combined melodic sophistication, rhythmic vitality, repertoire imagination and devotional warmth. The evening demonstrated how a thoughtfully chosen programme can itself become a form of musical storytelling.

For the rasika, it was a rewarding journey—one that began with the exuberance of Kadanakutuhala and concluded in the contemplative glow of Arunachala.

A concert of considerable musical substance, distinctive repertoire and lingering emotional resonance.

One attends a live concert to have an undisturbed bridge to an individual's quest to connect with one's inner self through music. When you come across one such a bridge that is never ending, it must be THAT 3 hour show, delivered with imppeccable acumen for both sahitya bhAva and bhakti bhAva by none other than the maestro Vid. Ramakrishnan Murthy

The sky this evening was gloomy bringing in a fear of a possible drenched out concert. But Rain Gods had better plans for the rasikas who wanted to traverse this bridge.

After few minutes being spent on setting up the mic system, the curtains rolled over to uncover a well lit stage what was even brighter by 4 stars seated in their respective roles.

The Grand evening started with guruvandana (madguru gajAsya..) and moments later darbAr varNa delivered in 2 speeds. The mics needed adjustment, before the next song began. It was

Being a Wednesday, BUDHA was paid obeisance in the form of the navagraha krithi by muttuswAmi dIkshitar.

The traditional AlApane in pantuvarALi was astute bhAva and commanding brilliance in bringing the sap in a short span of 3 mins of vocal presentation. Violinist responded equally brilliantly. vADEra deivamu manasa was a treat to listen. The tempo matched the prayful pathos with nereval at dhātṛ vinutuḍaina tyāgarājuni meaning (O My Mind! He alone is The God who, having accepted the worship of Lord Siva )

Without a filler, Vid. Ramakrishnan Murthy dwelled to develop madhyamAvati, and the obvious choice was rAma kathA sudha. quite elaborate presentation made this the sub main piece of the concert. Violin response was a shadow image of the vocal presentation. Neraval and swaras were adequate . Korappu was creative and so was the anticipation by the team to respond to it. The teaming was very evident. For all the reportaire he holds, was expecting another not so popular tyAgarAja krithi in this rAga. A very short tani followed the kriti presentation.

swAmi mukhya prANa in yadukula kAMbodhi( though i have heard the same in other rAgas , especially in Anandabhairavi is evocative as compared to yadukula kAmbOdhi) was crisp and presented the composer skills of Sri RKSK who had taught this to Vid. Ramakrishnan Murthy.

Todi AlApane began with a short cycle, disappointing audience. It was just 1 hr 45 mins into the concert and nothing elaborate coming in. But it was a surprise to be delivered. The second cycle onwards the elaboration was pretty detailed exploring many sangatis of tODI. A 30 mins presentation of rAga and tAna had done its foundational duty for an intricate pallavi. tAraya sadA rAmachandra mUrte, KOTita shivachApa kIrte, presented with a 2 beat edupu on a 2 Kalai khaNDa triputa tALa had all necessary technical embellishments. rAgamAlika transition to and fro was seamless and demonstrated the creative capabilities of both vocalist and violinist. Second tani too was shorter than the first one ! even the percussionists wanted to listen more to the singer.

post-tODi RTP , the concert comprised of thukkadas, was executed very well. Organiser hinted the requests for "jAvali" and "tillAna" were honoured. shArade karuNanidhe , a composition of srigeri seer tuned by Vid. RKSK in hamIr kalyANi was sedate and set the tone for a power packed "thrillAna" in pUrNachandrika, composed by Puchi Srinivasa Iyengar.

The percussionists - Vid. Bangalore V Praveen and Vid. Giridhar Udupa played together as a team, though at times I felt, Mridangist was overpowering both singer and the other percussionist. 2 Tanis that were delivered were crisp and was surprising, the long solo turns never came up !

A strenuous day that started very early at 4.30 (after a short previous night sleep) ended with as simlar freshness when the last note of the day was delivered at 9.45 pm ! It was indeed a spiritual journey of oneness with almighty and a well spent evening.

Long live the tribe of Ramakrishnan Murthy

The brothers are noted for their onstage experiments, a few of them I'm witness to and few of them I have taken pains of writing too. These 2 concerts were no exception.

During the concert at Vani School, the younger of the duo started soliciting swara sthAnas to compose a raga for the main piece RTP for the day. As the inputs flourished, it turned out to be rishabhapriya and the brothers demonstrated their authority with unmistakable ease. It just showed the amount of sadhana they had done during their formative years to exhibit this level of confidence in front of a large audience. Their father who was in audience also was one among the cheer leaders for the artists as they received abundant applause throughout the concert.

The presentation was exquisite. While every moment of the concert was of high caliber delivery by the team, this was the highlight of the day. A heavy rain at the end of the concert ensured the audience basked in the reverberations of a high-energy concert that just ended.

I was sure to follow the brothers wherever they go. They have become a rare sight (is that the right word?) for Bangalore audience. My next stop was at Sree Ramaseva Mandali the very next day.

The brothers scaled a notch higher today as compared to yesterday. To pay tribute to tyAgarAja's exclusive laya contribution "dEsAdi tALA", they felt it was injustive to play only one song in that tALA. Hence, they decided to deliver entire set of tyAgarAja's dEsAdi tALa compositions as a rAgamALika. They named it as tyAgarAga. Thanks to them, here is the link to the live recording of that performance. Even after these many days, it raises goose bumps while I relive the moment. An inexhaustible mine of music has just been captured for posterity for rasikas to relive the legendary stories of such immortal performance.

A repeat of yesterday's experiment landed up in rAmapriyA for RTP. No doubt, it’s a rare treat that could be expected only in the such capable fiddling monks.

It left the audience dazed, stunned and wonderstruck with its incredibility which feeling that would continue even after the concert is long over.

Concert Experience

Indian classical music thrives on the inherent tension between the old and new. The art form and its grammar are fairly hoary (even if you don't go back all the way to the sAma vEda, the modern form of the music itself is at least a couple of centuries old - the time of the Trinity). However, each performance is in-situ and in the current moment.

The challenge for any performer to create something new and unique everytime s/he steps on the stage, while maintaining the link to the base grammar.

Vidwan Ramakrishnan Murthy (referred to as RKM here-on) is one of the most exciting young talents in our art form. To me, what distinguishes him from most of his contemporaries is his focus on rakti rAgas, wherein most other young singers seem taken in with the scalar ragas like kiravANI, latAngI or the multitude of aUDavA ragas that abound our rAga landscape. This also reflects in his more relaxed kAlapramANa as against the thrill of speed that seems to catch most other youngsters' fancy.

The evidence of this was on full display across the two days - the choice of rAgAs seemed a throwback to a time long gone. Also, he took up two purandaradAsa compositions as main pieces on both days - my usual carp has been that the pitAmahA's music has been usually relegated to fast fillers and the tukkaDA section!

On day 1 (27 Apr), we had bilaharI, maNirangu and pUrvikalyANI as the main rAgAs that were elaborated. Even the shortened pieces were in mAyAmALavagAULA, AhirI and bahudArI.

It's been a long time since I heard an elaboration of bilaharI, and it was a very pleasant experience to say the least. The kritI was new for me at least - a purandaradAsa pada in khandachApu, very reminiscent of tOLi janma and paridAnamicchitE. Elaborate neraval was also done in the charaNa.

maNirangu was taken up for elaboration, followed by mAmava paTTAbhirAmA - the only regret was that that neraval was not taken up - he seemed to halt at navaratna maNTapE as if deciding whether to launch into neraval but sadly decided against it. Otherwise, a classical rendition, followed by what was to be the first of the two tanI AvartanEs of the day.

pUrvikalyANI was chosen for RTP. The pallavI sahitya (daSharatha bAla rAmachandrayyA dayAnidhE) is quite an old one, and it was presented in miShra triputA. After the rAgamAlikA swara prasthAra, a second tanI AvartanE was taken up. In PK rtp when he took ragamalika swaras, a garland of 5 to 6 ragas with one round each and, the concluding round was continuous rendition of all six ragas in returning order ending with PK was good, of course if his voice had cooperated it would have  been a grand rtp

The concert was wound down with a soothing shlOka in kApI, hamsAnandI and sindhubhAiravI, followed by aruNAchala kavirAyars composition. ANDAL's tiruppAvai - vanga kaDal kaDainda in suruTI was the final piece, flowing into maNgaLam kOsalEndrAya.

The accompanists were exceptional - the tone of the violin and the mridangam need to made special mention of.

- - - - - - - - -
The second concert at SRSM was an equally grand affair, with the two main rAgAs being varALI and ShankarAbharaNam.

He started off with two ShlOkAs, on vinAyakA and brihaspatI, followed by brihaspatE as the vara kriti for the day.

After a brisk evaraNI, he settled into the first big AlApanE of the day and a grand varALI it was. He then surprised the audience further by taking up kana kana ruchirA and went on to do neraval and swara prasthArA at kaminchI prEma mIra. Its been a long while since I heard a pancharatna kriti being taken up for elaboration in this manner - the last was TMK a few years back with jagadAnanda kArakA. Of course, the unique MDR would take up these grand pieces for elaboration, particularly endarO mahAnubhAvulU.

The main rAgA for the day was ShankarAbharaNa, and pOgadiralO rangA of purandaradAsA was taken up. I have heard two versions of this from the past masters - one from MLV and another from KVN. RKM's rendition followed the KVN paThAntarA.

After the ShlOkA (vAmE bhUmi sutA) which he finished with khamAs, he moved on to brochEvarevarurA.

haridAsulu veDalE and nInyAko ninna hangyAkO brought the concert towards closure, and he closed with bhadrAchala rAmadAsA's mangalam - rAmachandrAya jankajA manOharAya, and finally mangaLam kOsalEndrAya.

While the quality of music was as usual of the highest order in both concerts, RKM's voice is somehow showing some signs of strain. While there were no lapses in Shruti, he seemed to be making more of an effort than his usual carefree style. Hope it is a temporary occurrence (as they say in Cricket - form is temporary, but the class is permanent), and not due to overuse or something else that could lead to long term damage.

These 2 concerts have ensured my guaranteed attendance to RKM when he visits next to Bangalore in August 2016.
