The onset of monsoon was around the corner when I received the invite to this concert through snail mail, and I had the worst fears in my mind, both of which came true. Poor publicity to the program and a possible evening rain in Bengaluru to play spoilsport even on the genuine Rasika who want to be there at the venue to listen to the concert.

It was 18.10 when I reached the venue, to be the second audience to enter into the hall. The rain had already created havoc from 16.30 and I had taken sufficient precautions to reach dry at the venue. I could hear the tambUri being tuned in the green room and spotted worried organizers of a possible poor turnout due to rains. The 2 successive evenings before had good turnout due to dry evening weather.

(Pic: Weather on my way back from office !!)

The concert started almost 15 mins late, as probably the organizers wanted a respectable size of the audience to assemble. The delayed start was further delayed by a detailed and anecdotal introduction by Sabha President.

But as fortune favours the brave, there was a warm soothing treat waiting for the ones who dared the odds. What followed for next 2 hours was a feast of pristine classical music. It was music for the sake of purists, without gimmickry, devout and soulful throughout the stretch of the concert.

With a good rendition of shlOka (sadguru gajAsya vAni in kalyANi) Ramakrishnan Murthy and team quickly jumped into Eta vunnAra. A detailed presentation of swaras ensured complete justice to the delayed start. The varNa was a welcome skip as he could do justice here.

hindOla that followed was elaborated very well and carefully. It was the need of the hour. After rains, Bengaluru had almost turned Ooty cold. The presentation brought in warmth amidst the cold breeze drifting across the auditorium as the doors were kept wide open. Apt to its association with feeling of swinging outdoor uyyAle bedecked with freshness and colours of flowers, Ramakrishna Murthy and H K Venkatram brought out various hues of the rAga during  nereval and swaras at 'yAdava kula muraLi'. The swara korappu in 4th speed by both of them left butterflies in the stomach.

There were no embellishments to nAttakuranji krithi, but the very kAlaparamANa at which it was rendered was apt and mellifluous. The song from Nandan charitram, Nandan rues his fortune of not able to have the darshan of lord from outside the temple as nandi is right blocking his darshan view. The bhakti bhAva was well articulated.

The main for the evening, surUTi AlApane was embellished with a lot of innovation and the kAlapramANa in which he rendered it in a slow tempo was very good. It took a few phrases of surUTi to bring out the picture of surUTi and after that ideas came in like a whirlwind and bang!! It was gone too. I was left with wanting for more at the end of 9 minutes of blissful surUTi.

With choices between tyAgarAja and dIkshitar, it was tyAgarAja who continued to rule the roost for the evening with gItArthamu kriti. The AlApane, neraval, and swaras were done true to textbook prayOga and carefully showing the quintessential pa ma ri s prayOga of surUTi time and again and last few halting on ma alone. It was nicely rendered with neraval and swara at 'vAtAtmajuniki'. With a lot of vintage sanchAra and swara patterns, the long kOrvai was quite different from the regular one added to final finishing touches as the concert drifted into a rather melodious tani.

'sowkhya' - describes the percussion team for the evening. I was wondering the sparse audience in the hall would add to amplified effect of a usually high-decibel tani. But this was an exception on the pleasant side. I have heard several live concerts of this team before but, never have I come out with this feeling of sowkhya ushered in by the same percussion duo. Both being seated across the vocalist, they enjoyed themselves with many mutual applauses "bhale bhale". They did not resort to loud banging the drum to produce more noise than music. The Audience would have thumbed it down. It was plain and simple, enriched the music that was being presented.

The concert concluded with 4 short pieces as listed.

HK Venkatram played to his potential in the solo versions of the rAgas and swaras. Having played to veterans like Semmangudi, he timed his AlApane to be brief but, captured the essence of the raga in them.

Ramakrishnan Murthy with an ideal team of accompanists, presented a nectar concert to remember for the fortunate audience who assembled. He was in best of his form, so were the accompanists who were all charged up, fed back to the main artiste went into a spiral and as a team, they delivered the best. The end result was rich and complete music. Thanks to Karnataka Lalita Kala Parishat for organising this team to perform. After listening to such performances, one is happy for our spiritual forutunes for bestowing us an ear for music and ability to take time out from our hectic vocational obligations.

PS:
I'm flabbergasted by the quality of the simple and vintage sound system at the hall. It has reproduced glitch free audio all through, as against complicated sound systems that had their own woes during Ramanavami season !!

In a lecdem on the concert paddhati of Sri ARI, Sri KVN had mentioned that ARI would use the varnam to check the felicity of his voice on a given day and then decide what to attempt that day, so as to stay within the bounds of what his voice could deliver THAT day. The crux of this self awareness - the whole process was invisible to the audience! They would go away having heard yet another successful concert from the master. That according to Sri KVN was the greatness of ARI as a concert craftsman.

Sri NSG had that opportunity today. From the opening bars of the tODi varna, it was abundantly clear his voice was not cooperative. Anything above the Madhya sthAyi Panchamam was iffy at best; the tAra sthAyi Shadja was, as the late TRS used to say about some vidwans - "trial and terror" ... Today it was less trial, more of the other! His mandra sthAyi voice was holding up very well enough though, at least in comparison.

The selection of songs showed glimpses of the ARI planning - each a piece NSG could deliver purely on muscle memory. The stock tuLasi daLa, nEnendu Vedukudura, mAkelara vichAramu and kA vA vA were all trotted out.  Good effort was put in to settle down with these.

As if to underline the ARI motif, Pantuvarali made its due appearance as the first AlApane of the day, with Raghuvara Nannu Maravaku to follow.

Where the similarity with ARI ended was his not accepting his temporal limitations of the day - NGS kept attempting notes that were tantalizingly out of reach. The nadir of the concert was the AlApane in mOhana. NSG decided that brow beating his recalcitrant voice into shape was the way to go. The result - some mighty funny phrasing of plain notes, sounding Chinese / Japanese in inspiration - where he tried to hit the correct swarasthanas at least as plain notes. The closest parallel I can think of is Rahul "The Wall" Dravid repeatedly getting bowled, either in the gap between bat and pad or past the outside edge, on his last tour - it was pathetic to see what that once great forward defense had been reduced to.

In the swara prasthara in mOhana rAma, NGS tried some vocalization techniques of the late MMI. Unfortunately, the key to pulling that off is MMI's pitch perfect delivery! Large portions of swara prastAra was dealt in mandra sthAyi.

Charulatha Ramanujam very gamely tried to keep the concert afloat. Her accompaniment was exemplary in trying to supplement for the main artiste without showing him up - a tight rope walk, worthy of Vidwan T N Krishnan in his accompanying heydays.

Arjun Kumar could rename himself has Declibel Kumar. At one point, sound engineer had to ambush the stage to push the mics atleast 6 inches away to bring down the delibel levels of mridanga accompaniment. However, in a counning moment, he pulled it nearer to retain his attrocious decibel levels, other than hogging the LION SHARE of the percussion accompaniment.

Vid. Ranganatha Chakravarthy, was a stark contrast to other ghatam artists whom I have heard. Waited for his turns and played apt. The ssound of which, still persists in my memory after the concert. The sound blended well with violinist when they played their returns.

Many artists have a personal bias against Konnakkol as an accompaniment to vocal music - it distracts. Here, the shruti shuddham of Somashekhara Jois only highlighted the gap in that area even more for the vocalist!

NSG did make a comment at the start of the tani avartanam about a concert being team work; well, the player with the star billing unfortunately was relying on reputation rather than form to deliver.

Pavamana finally arrived with as much anticipation as the shout of "Land ahoy!" from the crow's nest of a ship that has been tossed about in choppy waters for several days having lost its bearings.

Being a working day, did not expect Monday blues to impact me, but my BIKE did not want to co-operate as I had planned to drive to concert directly from office. Even though yesterday night from Saketaraman concert, I drove mostly on newly surfaced roads, it had picked 4 punctures. Reluctantly I travelled ot office by car (confession: I personally don't like draining my energy by driving car on Bangalore roads). Hoped that the day would end with a better note.

As I could wind up the work on time, started off to drive 20 km through winding routes and chaotic traffic on a Monday evening. dejavu.. the traffic was exactly as expected.. draining the energy to be rejuvenated by the brothers and their team.

The first act of rejuvenation came in form of AshIrvAda from Guru Malladi Suri Babu who accompanied the sons to the concert. I met them to place a khwAish for a song. More about this later.

The evening started  with micAsura being warded off through the holy spirits of noble souls around. Malladi Brothers presented an exhilarating concert of serene, poise and chaste classical fare. Sensitive and sowkhya in tone and equally soft bow playing by Mysore Nagaraj focussed this evening with vidwath laden concert. Each one of them demonstrated strong sruti sudham, good imagination, padantharam and stage presence.

With a brief rAga outline, the concert started with kEdAragauLa varna (a very rarely sung Varna these days I must say) and was presented in a gripping kAlapramANa and additional kalpanA swaras were very nicely crafted.

The next song praNamAmyaham provided the required liveliness and blessings from lord Ganapathi to the concert. Just a month back I had presented the song in our office concert, and my whole body and mind was resonating to each sangati performed by the brothers. In fact I could learn a few more sangathis from their presentation. A very refreshing performance.

Expected bilahari alApane to be a long one (aligning to the customary format), but it turned out to be an outline. Without much elaboration, srI bAlasubrahmanaNyam was presented in a leisurely pace.

Was wondering whether my khwAish would be fulfilled as a filler / with due deligence. (This reminds me of one such request made in nAdasurabhi for a mukhAri piece and they converted it to the main piece of the concert with tani!!). One should love these artist for this reason, at least. The requests are judiciously honoured.

The Bhairavi AlApane in dIkshitar school style had all its nuances. The AlApane had many interesting and surprising moments which are not usually heard in the AlApane of bhairavi of tyAgarAja school which once again vouched for his abundant manodharmam and vidwath.

The kriti (chintaya mAam kandamUla Kandam) is a perfect bill to be sung as the main song, but sadly very few pick up this. There was detailed neraval with elaborate swara prastaras at the pallavi. The long Avarartane of first kalam swaras was brimming with raga bhAva which had many aha moments in that. Mysore Nagaraj was at his melodic pinnacle. I wish he does similar justice while playing with his brother.

Adena ma harudu drugu tataiyani in parAju pepped up between 2 slow pieces of the concert. A longer outline than normal for a filler and that too in parAju was a welcome change.

Kalyani outline was with telling details and the kriti Isha pAhimAm  (kshEtra krithi of tapas tIrthapuram / lAlguDi by tyAgarAja) was a good choice for a filler. While the big 5 are selected for main, it did bring out equal soothing impact while presented in short bits. We have heard this as main song in many concerts. It was sung in a tad slow pace than many others and it was good.

The alapane of kAMbOdhi which was taken up as the main ragam was highly imaginative. I did not expect this right after kAMbOdhi, but its the artist's choice as they wanted to present one of their favourites this evening.  The detailed AlApane , krithi, nereval and tani occupied 67 minutes of the evening !! Energitic youngsters on percussion toned down the

This ensured that there was no further time for RTP (as the curtailed the concert to 2.30 hrs as against the schedule of 3.00 hrs)

Fillers included compositions in kalgaDa, bEhAg, dwijAvanti which were presented with full justice and no rushing.

The accompaniments played their role admirably. Mysore Nagaraj’s violin was sweet and his replies and solos were most appropriate. He also excelled in his solo for bhairavi and kAmbOdhi. Arjun Kumar has been on the steady scale of progress since he began his tutelage under Dr. UKS and showed that he is a chip of the old block. His thoppi patterns were very enjoyable and his tani received repeated applause.

Giridhar Udupa played an apt role throughout the concert. And one could see what an outstanding artist Giridhar is. Such gifted fingers on the ghata, the years of tutelage under vid. Sukanya and his exposure to other forms of classical music was evident in each and every stroke he played.

Percussionist had a field day during tani as they enjoyed camaraderie.

A lively and highly satisfying concert for more than two and a half hours. My picks in this concert were the Bhairavi AlApane, KambOdhi AlApane and kalpana swaras.

It was an easy choice as I had to decide on the grand finale for the long season. Decided to attend Abhishek, and there could not have been a better ending.

A pristine srIranjani and kANtAmaNi with brisk swaras for both compositions were the highlight. Violinist rose to the situation. Arjun Kumar and Sundar Kumar provided apt support. While we are used to standard violin and mridanga accompaniment, it was nice to see a new combination and how the gelled well with the singer.

The inaugural concert of the festival started after a short lamp lighting ceremony and speech by the ddignitarieswhich lasted for 15 mins. RLKM is known for short speeches and this was no exception.

The stage was already set and the artists took off to a flying start with a 2 speed presentation of kAMbOdhi varNa which did soak in the necessary nectar of kAmbOdhi.  The very first note to take off the rAga sketch indicated the richness of knowledge to present the rAga even in small span of notes.

The organisers had announced that it would be a thematic concert on rare compositions / rare rAgas. I was expecting a treat of new songs and rAgas and the concert lived upto its hype.

vridulakku was presented without much ado. A quick start off and a detailed nereval was the highlight of the presentation.

Im hearing bAla sarasa murali only second time in the last 6 years of my concert attendance.. which is a clear indication that its a rare krithi. Even though I get confused between simhEndramadhyama and kIravANi many times... this presentation was an exception. Could recognise it as kIravANi and there was no aspect of confusion throughout the presentation... did not even get a cross thought that it could be simhEndramadhyama !!

Sedate nIAmbari AlApane set the right foundation for the nIke dayarAda. Even this composition a rare one on the concert circuit, brought out the best of the artists and the rAga.

nIlAmbari took off the sheen from bhOgindra shAyinam, which is usually presented briskly. The artists who had presented a 30 min long nIlAmbari were not out of it.. as they presented this. It was rather slower than any other presentation that I have heard. It sounded nice and soothing though.

The best of the day was saved for the RTP that flowed in. It was for the first time I'm hearing nItimati on the concert platform and it was pretty intriguing as there was large traces of simhEndramadhyama and rasikapriya in first and second half of the scale. Had to dig through the scale notes to zero in on nItimati. Picking up a rare rAga for RTP itself indicates the depth and richness of knowledge among the artists. A simple pallavi line was followed by a series of rAgamAlika swaras where the violinist played after each vocalist.

A brief tani (indeed tani as there was no upa pakkavAdya) brought out the nuances of various patterns for chaturaSra triputa tALa.

2 more compositions filled the post VOT slots.

The organizers have to be commended for an impeccable perfection in arrangements. The micAsura did not turn up even for an inaugural concert which is a deviation from the normal experience. The pendal around the boundary ensured that there is no great deal of disturbance from the traffic on the road and a kind of insulation from mosquitoes too !

Overall it was an evening well spent and a great beginning to 2015.
