One of the greatest signs of a mature professional is the ability to deliver the desired goal even when they are equipped with their full complement of resources. While youth is typically exemplified by that inability or refusal to accept temporary setbacks in previously available skills, maturity brings with it the willingness to eschew certain aspects of your abilities which are not at the levels you previously enjoyed.

In sporting terms, think of Sachin Tendulkar's 241 at Sydney in 2004, where he batted for 10 odd hours without once attempting the cover drive - one of his greatly productive strokes in the past, but one which had been getting him to trouble more recently. On a more sustained basis, it was also how he reinvented his batting after his tennis elbow surgery.

In Carnatic music history, the late Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar was the accepted benchmark for his ability to deliver consistent quality, irrespective of the state of his voice on any given day.

In the concert by the Malladi Brothers for Nadasurabhi, it was clear Vidwan Sriram Prasad's voice was not in the best of forms, particularly in the higher register. It was a lesson in planning how he stayed within the limitations of that day without compromising on the experience for the audience; he stayed and revelled in the lower register to phenomenal effect.

Of course, it helped that he had a partner who was in fine fettle, much like SRT had Very Very Special Laxman for company in that innings of 241! In addition the pitch conditions created by Vid. Charulata Ramanujam and Vid Tumkur B Ravishankar, Vid. B Rajashekar elevated the experience to a different plateau all-together.

It was almost during the Ramanavami season, I had an opportunity to listen to Brothers at Bangalore, and did not want to miss this opportunity.

With an outline, the team presented a sedate kEdAragaula, with utmost care to present the rAga bhAva. The mandra sthAyi zone resonated with the audience who were nodding to the tune.

nATa presented a tough challenge to the senior sibling. While they presented the swaras, the tennis elbow effect was very evident throughout. The swara patterns did not sound familiar. He was still exploring himself in the limited zone created by an un-cooperative voice. It must have been a though phase, but what I appreciated was they explored their new boundaries. Coming out of the comfort zone deserves a special applause.

asAvEri krithi with more notes floating in the mandra zone, brought back the controls of the concert to the singing siblings. AlApane was crisp and to the point.

2 fillers occupied the slots before the main came in the form of Bhairavi. Both brothers explored the chasm of Bhairavi to bring out the best rAga bhAva. It was quite a detailed exploration through known passages and few new patterns. Vid. Charulata scaled the AlApane to new heights bringing in her manOdharma and finesse in playing.

manOdharma presented during tanayuni brOva evoked the bhakti rasa resembling what tyAgarAga imagined during his composition.

Tumkur Ravishankar and B Rajashekar did a fine job of delineating the tani in the same swara patterns as the muktAyi presented.

Valaji was a surprise choice for RTP. Detailed shared delineation of rAga and tAna evoked many instances of applause from the audience.

durga, navrOK, bEhAg occupied the post main slots before ending with the customary maraLi maraLi ...

The concert should be remembered for a long time for 2 reasons. How artists explore beyond their comfort zone and the way team scaled up to the surprises (of manodharma) on stage. Hope they are fit as a fiddle when they embark the ambitious MARGAZHI Season shortly.

What are the benefits of being a fan of aesthetic music? There are no rewards for the guesses. You are treated to your heart's content with sampradAya sangIta, to an exclusive audience without the disturbance from the so called gallery crowd who thong the auditorium (I don’t know why, they love to come to disturb others through their chit-chat!), and get to occupy VIP reserved seats to get the best view of the artists on the stage.

Being a working day, had to plan the whole day at office to make myself available to attend this long awaited concert. When I attended TMK's concert a couple of days back, tried out the METRO option to reach the venue. Not a great experience though. In the name of convenience, I almost spent an additional 2 hrs away from home!

The hopes were high on the torch bearers of Lalgudi bAni. It was tradition all over, meditative to the core and there was something melodiously new and refreshing about the way each song was presented and improvised. Well, that’s what makes a great artist.

The curtains rolled up on the dot. Sticking to their tradition of announcing the songs, the first one, customary obeisance to Guru, the Sibling duo presented a refreshing naLinakAnti varNa without any additional kalpanA swarAs.

Then came the lilting muddumOmu, a brief AlApane to prelude and beautifully rounded off with kalpanA swarAs.

The first of the detailed AlApane came in form of a lilting kEdAragauLa, which showcased the rAga lakshaNa very well. The krithi was rendered nicely with few rounds of kalpanA swarAs.
The short outline of jayantaShri provided enough clue to the filler krithi " marugElara O rAghava" was in the queue

The next elaboration for the evening was brindAvana sAranga. It had all the rangu (colours) that the rAga could be decorated with. Brisk and leisurely sangatis in AlApane provided clue to the faster of the 2 masterpieces of muttuswAmi dIkshitar. The krithi " srI rangapura vihAra" was rendered soulfully. After a quick round of swarAs,

Without spacing with a filler, the duo dwelled into depths and breadths of sAvEri bringing out the best essence of yearning feeling. Felt like asking it to be followed up with a tAna before starting the kriti (as in a vINA concert), but felt a bit hesitant. "Shankari shamkuru" with a detailed neraval and swara prastAra was a treat. Of the 100 this concert scores, i would give this rendition itself 99.

The main course mOhana AlApane was quite elaborate and beautiful with duo sharing the mandra and tAra zones to compliment the sangatis of the other. The krithi "mOhana rAma" was rendered beautifully with neraval and swarAs at "mOhana rAma".

Vid. Tumkur Ravishankar was exact in his replies and played well with meticulously following the kriti and each sangati. Vid. Giridhar Udupa was good as well in adding his bit to the concert effect. The tani by the two percussionists was yet another separate treat.

With a brief VOT session (it was almost 2.5 hrs by then into the concert), the duo surprised the audience venturing into RTP. I would have been disappointed, if it were to be just a trailer, but they did not. The dwelled pretty well into raiskapriya. A overenthusiastic family seated behind me, prompting rAga names erring left right and center, too spoiled the mood during rAga tAna as they were continuously scratching their heads. graha bEdha into hamsanAdam was a treat to listen to and see the fingering.

Pallavi in chaturaSra tripuTa , 1.5 beat eDupu was rendered well embellished quickly with a set of rAgamAlika swaras

The post RTP course was filled with a rAgamAlika composition of bhAratiyAr, dwijAvanti tiruppugazh, on request mOhanakalyANi tillANa which were leisurely rendered.

The sibling duo were awesome throughout the concert and they well supported by the accompanists. A Pallavi billed into and extended time slot made the concert too good to remember for a long time. Well, it had everything that you could ask for in a violin concert.

It will be a concert to remember for a long time.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word "Serendipity" as "The occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way"; of course there are more colourful but earthy definitions involving needles, haystacks and sons / daughters of the soil. A more colloquial adage goes "if life gives you lemons, make lemonade!"

Be as it may, it was indeed an unexpected but pleasant turn of events at the Fort High School. I went there in anticipation of listening to one of the most sensitive instrumentalists we have on the concert circuit, Smt Jayanthi Kumaresh; having recently heard a recording of her late guru S Balachandar's recent lec-dem on tanam (delivered at the Indian Fine Arts Society circa 1985), I was going full of enthusiasm with an intent to request her to play tAnam in dEvagAndhArI. But it was not to be; on reaching the venue (I had missed a Facebook update by SRSM earlier today- and hence a surprisingly sparse crowd invited me at the venue. The other reason could be that the junior concerts are done and dusted, the junior concert crowd was certainly missing), I got to know that the vidUShI was indisposed and would not be performing today.

This is where the serendipity kicked in - her slated violin accompanist, Kum Akkarai Subhalakshmi (AS), stepped in to perform a solo concert, and a magnificent stepping did she do! Of course, AS is a very competent solo artiste in her own right, so this was not like a night watchman in test cricket coming in to protect more established batsman against the fading light towards the end of a day's play and going on to score a century (that btw is concept I have never quite understood - how is sending a batsman with known weaker technique in a potential minefield of a situation good strategy? But this is not the time and place for THAT discussion, so I will drop it here!)

She started of with swAti mahArAjA's grand aTa tALa varNam in kAmbhOjI (sarasIjanAbha), an straightway established her layA credentials, rendering the varNam in four speeds (I think the four speeds are as follows - Pallavi + Anupallavi + Muktayi Swarams first in 6 avartanas of 2 Kalai Ata, then 4 avartanas, then over 3 avaratanas and finally in 2 avartanas. NOT SURE - this is the only way I can make sense of it, as she has played only one cycle in each speed, so the next speed has to start in the standard eduppu. Could be completely off the mark here). The varNam was preceded by a short but evocative outline of the rAgA.

Next up was svAminAtha paripAlayA in nATa. Only recently, I was discussing the vivAdi nature of nATa with a group on friends and we were debating if the rAgA is really representative of a vivAdi set, unlike say chalanATa. However, AS's opening bars demonstrated the musical tension between the ShadShrutI riShabha and the antara gAndhAra beautifully, neatly establishing its vivAdi nature. A brisk round of kalapanA swarAs were rendered for the pallavI.

mOhana was taken up a the first AlApanE of the day. A bit of hyperbole, but there were flashes of the great Lalgudi Jayaraman's mOhanam in some of the phrasing (both jAru and sthAyis). Of course, with the great man, you heard mOhana even during fairly long pauses in the AlApanE - that level is yet to be attained by the young lady; she just needs to hone the art of pausing with effect. rAmA ninnu namminA was the kriti chosen, played at a jaunty madhyamA kAla. The kriti was rendered without neraval, and kalpanA swarAs were rendered for the pallavI. There was a brief exchange of ideas between her and the percussionists in the kuraippu. As an aside, I have usually heard swaraprasthAra for this kritI either at the pallavi, like today, or at the anupallavI (pAmara jana). I have always wondered why no one renders the swarAs at "daSharatha", in the first line of the charaNA - as a bathroom singer / hummer, it seems to be a spot replete with possibility, particularly given the swarAksharA facility available there. Maybe its just that I have not come across it, but is reasonably common!

Then came another surprise. After playing maNirangu AlApanE (which has been fairly common in this season, so that was not the surprise), she started playing the kritI but at some point decided that she would rather sing it rather than play it! She is a competent, concert level vocalist so it was not some whimsical indulgence on her part. Maybe she felt that Dikshitar's beautiful sAhityA needed to expressed as such, and not just as notes. It was a good touch at the end.

A very brisk brOva bhAramA followed (with flashes of MSG school during swaras), with the charaNa played at an even faster pace than the pallavi & anupallavi, with some rapid fire chiTTaswarAs and also kalpanA swarAs for the pallavI.

The main piece of the day was an elaborate RTP in ShaNmukhaprIyA. She spent a good amount of time exploring the beauty of the rAgA in the pUrvangA and the mandra sthAyI. ShaNmukhaprIyA is the quintessential nAgaswara rAgA, and the nature of that instrument is such that most people assume that this rAgA shines only in the passages around the niShAda, tArA sthAyi ShaDja and riShabha, which is so not the case. AS of course went to play in that zone too, but only after exploring the meditative regions below. The closing movements of the AlApanE were again in the mandra sthAyI and the quality and clarity of sound production was simply superlative in the durita passages in the lower octave.

Particular mention needs to be made of the tAnam playing. The clarity of bowing in practically enunciating the staccato syllables of "anatam Anantam" was of a praiseworthy. I have heard experts say that tAnam should not be just a faster exposition of the AlApanE, as is so often the case with so many instrumentalists - it has a character of its own and should be treated as such. AS's tAnam did not suffer from the problem - at not point did you feel that this was merely faster AlApanE with some cut bowing. Maybe it is her tutelage under a string instrumentalist of Chitravina Ravikiran's caliber, maybe it is her solid grounding under her own father, maybe it is inborn - or all of the above!

Till now, she had been following Ravikiran's practice of announcing the details of the compositions after the rendition (as CRK usually says - "to give the guessers a chance"). However, for whatever reason she chose to deviate from this practice for the pallavI. Most instrumentalists usually announce the sAhityA of the pallavI upfront, and a significant number of them usually sing a couple of Avartanas of the pallavI to establish the structure for the audience and the accompanists. Particularly given her vocal skills, not singing the pallavI was particularly vexing. The pallavI had a distinct khanDa gait to it; I couldn't count the aksharAs confidently enough though. The pallavI went something like this "SaRi, RiGa, GaMa, MaPa, PaDha, DhaNi, RiSa", soon morphing to "SaRiGaMaGa, RiGaMaPaMa, GaMaPaDhaPa, MaPaDhaNiDha, PaDhaNiSaNi, DhaNiSaRiSa, RiSa" - I know its not very illustrative, but its the best I can do!

The neraval was not detailed much before she moved onto the kalpanA swarAs, and did a rAgamAlika in behAg, hamsAnandI and dEsh, closing by playing them back in reverse order. This was followed by the tanI.

Tumkur Ravishankar's (who also received the lemon of the day as he was a replacement artist for Vid. Arjun Kumar) mastery revealed with controlled playing to the kalapramana with highly imaginative korvais all through and tani provided an opportunity to show his vidwath. Immensely talented and experienced percussionist, Trichy Krishna played in line with him also with his own imagination and creativity in delivering a perfectly paired tani.

Patnam Subramanier's khamAs tillAnA was rendered as the last piece before the mangalam.

Sound System worked perfectly well, though the shruti levels were a tad high at the beginning of the concert.

Overall, a very refreshing lemonade for the scorching summer heat, given the lemon handed out by the originally billed artiste's indisposition. My only request to AS would be to add a bit more viShrAnti to her playing - some chAUka pieces, some more pauses particularly in the AlApanE, more focus on AlApanE and neraval. She has all the ingredients to be an all time great in the art (clarity of sound, clean bowing, abundant imagination, solid gAyakI footing) but some patience would go a long way in getting her there!

AS belongs to a niche category of violinists who deliver masterly 3 hour vocal concerts as the situation demands. AS - in this case could have pulled out a one-off voco-violin concert (a Deja Vu that I felt when she took the stage, and later once again when she sang maNirangu) as she had all freedom to experiment in front of the sparse (read it as niche) crowd. However, she may have saved it for another day and another audience.

Anecdote:
During the VOT, it was mentioned that in the history of SRSM, similar replacement concerts (by a violinist) have occurred. A noteworthy coincidence was
1. Mysore T Choudaiah taking place of Mysore Vasudevachar (when his voice was not in shape to take the stage)
2. Dr. Mysore Manjunath taking the place of T R Mahalingam, when he did not turn up for concert that fine day
3. Yesterday..Akkarai Subhalakshmi taking place of Jayanthi Kumaresh.

In all the 3 cases, the Violinist have excelled par excellence to make rasikas remember those evenings for long-long time.

While many sabhas don't schedule a violinist accompaniment for a Veena Concert, this was a deja Vu that worked in favour of the Sabha.

Combined experience:

Is a target audience indeed the best judge of what is "right" for them? Henry Ford was a strong opponent of this idea; he is famously said to have said that if he had taken inputs from his consumers, he would have "designed" a faster horse, and not a car!

So, where does a performer in the creative arts draw the line in terms of taking feedback or suggestions from his or her intended audience (in our world of Carnatic music, take requests?) Does taking requests from the audience constitute "playing to the gallery", or even more pejoratively "pandering to the lowest common denominator"? If so, is it always so or does it depend on what is being requested?

Several artistes both past and present have been labelled populist for keeping audience tastes in mind. But an artiste (most at least) draw their energy from the audience and the appreciation they get for their efforts. It is indeed a rare artiste who performs in a vacuum, insulated from the tastes of even a tiny part of the listening public, with no desire or need for appreciation.

Most artistes would it appears like to strike a balance between creative freedom and audience choice. In several interviews, artistes have stated their appreciation for audiences who go beyond the obvious and ask the artiste for something more rare, something that is special to  but not frequently rendered by the performer, something that shows the audience is also doing its homework of thinking and making the artiste think in turn.

My experience with the Malladi Brothers has led to believe that they definitely belong to the group who are happy when their audiences make them dig into their reserves, for something old and precious - a long lost gem, a hidden treasure of their school.

Between my friends and me, we have had the opportunity to request them for specific compositions, and not only have they happily acquiesced each time, they have actually expressed their gratitude for being asked for these! (just for the record, in the past we had requested for muripemu galige in mukhAri, a detailed dhanyAsi and chintayamAm kanda mUla in bhAIravI).

Today we requested them for not one, but two compositions - AragimpavE in tODI and nannu brOva maNI cheppavE in kalyANI, and both were presented (tODI actually as the submain, with detailed AlApanE, neraval and swarams) and the kalyANI as a brisk piece with an outline AlApanE. Well to be completely transparent, we had requested three pieces (the third being kOrinavaramu in rAmapriyA, which was not rendered today) but that was just us being greedy :)

I am not intending this to be a review or even a detailed description of two back to back concerts in Bangalore that I attended. The factual part of the reporting is there in the songlists of the two days. These are more expressions of emotions and feelings over the two days.

The concert at the RSM on 23 Apr was tilted just that bit towards the brain than the heart - there was an elaborate dharmAvatI AlApanE followed by bhaja sEya rAdA, and an elaborate RTP in ShankarAbharaNam, the pallavI in khaNDa tripuTA 2-kaLAI, eDuppu at 1/2 beat after samam. The AlApanE and tAnam were full of viShrAntI, exploiting the madhya sthAyI gAndhAra to the fullest extent - the ShankarAbharaNa gAndhAra is to me a note of unmatched majesty. The pallavI neraval was alaborate, and 4 speeds were rendered (chAUka kAla, sama-kAla or madhyama kAla, tisra naDAI and durita kAla). Kalpana swaram and tanI followed this.

The complaint if any was that there only two real AlApanEs in the concert.

That was most certainly rectified in the concert at Seshadripuram on 24 Apr. There were as many as four detailed AlApanEs (devagAndhArI, tODI, AnandabhAIravI and kAmbOdhi, besides short outlines for husEnI and kalyANI. Only bindumAlinI (enta muddO, which was also an audience request item through a chit) among the pre-tanI items was sung without any preamble.

husEnI presaged the arrival of rAmA ninnE namminAnu with near certainty, and the devagAndhArI AlApanE somehow made me sure we were heading to Dikshitar's masterpiece (kShitijA ramaNam chintayE) and not one of so many Thyagaraja masterpieces (the tail piece finishing in kShitijA ramaNam was somehow very very reminiscent of the closing of the pallavi of kshIra sAgara ShayanA :)

Given that we had request AragimpavE and nannu brOva maNI cheppavE, the choices for the songs in tODI and kalyANI respectively was not surprising. A special word needs to be mentioned about the quality of the neraval in AragimpavE; knowing and internalizing the meaning of the sAhityA makes such a big difference to the freedom with which the neraval is rendered! The way the brothers kept appending the word AragimpavE after sAramAIna divAnnamu or ShaDrasayuta bhakShaNamulu made so much sense - it reflected the spirit of nAIvEdyam so well ("SharkarAnnam nivEdayAMI, mAShAbUpam nivEdayAMI, mahAnAIvEdyam nivEdayAMI" etc.!)

The kAmbOdhi AlApanE was also one of exceptional calm. kAmbOdhi as a rAgA of course has a wide scope from very aggressive, macho tones to very soft, pleading tones. The AlApanE presaged the spirit of the composition presented - the full piece was recited before being sung, just to give a flavour of the bhakti rasA that mysUru vAsudEvAchArya has imbued mari mari vacchunA with.

As can be seen from the list, a wide swathe of composers and pieces were presented in the closing phases, including a rAgamAlikA slOkam - vAIdEhIsahitam suradrumatalE hAImE mahAmaNDapE.

All in all, two days of very blissful music. The brothers were fortunate on both days in terms of the accompanists - sensitive shadowing, sound kalpanA from the violinists on both days, and equally sensitive percussion accompaniment.

While a few had qualms about the sound system at SRSM, It was completely satisfactory to me (well .. that is the only part that is subjective in this whole post)
