Combined experience:

Is a target audience indeed the best judge of what is "right" for them? Henry Ford was a strong opponent of this idea; he is famously said to have said that if he had taken inputs from his consumers, he would have "designed" a faster horse, and not a car!

So, where does a performer in the creative arts draw the line in terms of taking feedback or suggestions from his or her intended audience (in our world of Carnatic music, take requests?) Does taking requests from the audience constitute "playing to the gallery", or even more pejoratively "pandering to the lowest common denominator"? If so, is it always so or does it depend on what is being requested?

Several artistes both past and present have been labelled populist for keeping audience tastes in mind. But an artiste (most at least) draw their energy from the audience and the appreciation they get for their efforts. It is indeed a rare artiste who performs in a vacuum, insulated from the tastes of even a tiny part of the listening public, with no desire or need for appreciation.

Most artistes would it appears like to strike a balance between creative freedom and audience choice. In several interviews, artistes have stated their appreciation for audiences who go beyond the obvious and ask the artiste for something more rare, something that is special to  but not frequently rendered by the performer, something that shows the audience is also doing its homework of thinking and making the artiste think in turn.

My experience with the Malladi Brothers has led to believe that they definitely belong to the group who are happy when their audiences make them dig into their reserves, for something old and precious - a long lost gem, a hidden treasure of their school.

Between my friends and me, we have had the opportunity to request them for specific compositions, and not only have they happily acquiesced each time, they have actually expressed their gratitude for being asked for these! (just for the record, in the past we had requested for muripemu galige in mukhAri, a detailed dhanyAsi and chintayamAm kanda mUla in bhAIravI).

Today we requested them for not one, but two compositions - AragimpavE in tODI and nannu brOva maNI cheppavE in kalyANI, and both were presented (tODI actually as the submain, with detailed AlApanE, neraval and swarams) and the kalyANI as a brisk piece with an outline AlApanE. Well to be completely transparent, we had requested three pieces (the third being kOrinavaramu in rAmapriyA, which was not rendered today) but that was just us being greedy :)

I am not intending this to be a review or even a detailed description of two back to back concerts in Bangalore that I attended. The factual part of the reporting is there in the songlists of the two days. These are more expressions of emotions and feelings over the two days.

The concert at the RSM on 23 Apr was tilted just that bit towards the brain than the heart - there was an elaborate dharmAvatI AlApanE followed by bhaja sEya rAdA, and an elaborate RTP in ShankarAbharaNam, the pallavI in khaNDa tripuTA 2-kaLAI, eDuppu at 1/2 beat after samam. The AlApanE and tAnam were full of viShrAntI, exploiting the madhya sthAyI gAndhAra to the fullest extent - the ShankarAbharaNa gAndhAra is to me a note of unmatched majesty. The pallavI neraval was alaborate, and 4 speeds were rendered (chAUka kAla, sama-kAla or madhyama kAla, tisra naDAI and durita kAla). Kalpana swaram and tanI followed this.

The complaint if any was that there only two real AlApanEs in the concert.

That was most certainly rectified in the concert at Seshadripuram on 24 Apr. There were as many as four detailed AlApanEs (devagAndhArI, tODI, AnandabhAIravI and kAmbOdhi, besides short outlines for husEnI and kalyANI. Only bindumAlinI (enta muddO, which was also an audience request item through a chit) among the pre-tanI items was sung without any preamble.

husEnI presaged the arrival of rAmA ninnE namminAnu with near certainty, and the devagAndhArI AlApanE somehow made me sure we were heading to Dikshitar's masterpiece (kShitijA ramaNam chintayE) and not one of so many Thyagaraja masterpieces (the tail piece finishing in kShitijA ramaNam was somehow very very reminiscent of the closing of the pallavi of kshIra sAgara ShayanA :)

Given that we had request AragimpavE and nannu brOva maNI cheppavE, the choices for the songs in tODI and kalyANI respectively was not surprising. A special word needs to be mentioned about the quality of the neraval in AragimpavE; knowing and internalizing the meaning of the sAhityA makes such a big difference to the freedom with which the neraval is rendered! The way the brothers kept appending the word AragimpavE after sAramAIna divAnnamu or ShaDrasayuta bhakShaNamulu made so much sense - it reflected the spirit of nAIvEdyam so well ("SharkarAnnam nivEdayAMI, mAShAbUpam nivEdayAMI, mahAnAIvEdyam nivEdayAMI" etc.!)

The kAmbOdhi AlApanE was also one of exceptional calm. kAmbOdhi as a rAgA of course has a wide scope from very aggressive, macho tones to very soft, pleading tones. The AlApanE presaged the spirit of the composition presented - the full piece was recited before being sung, just to give a flavour of the bhakti rasA that mysUru vAsudEvAchArya has imbued mari mari vacchunA with.

As can be seen from the list, a wide swathe of composers and pieces were presented in the closing phases, including a rAgamAlikA slOkam - vAIdEhIsahitam suradrumatalE hAImE mahAmaNDapE.

All in all, two days of very blissful music. The brothers were fortunate on both days in terms of the accompanists - sensitive shadowing, sound kalpanA from the violinists on both days, and equally sensitive percussion accompaniment.

While a few had qualms about the sound system at SRSM, It was completely satisfactory to me (well .. that is the only part that is subjective in this whole post)

08 tillAna Ahir bhairav Adi Dr. GBabySreeram

In a casual discussion, when my music friends indicated that its Dr Baby Sreeram peforming at Gayana Samaja, I cancelled all my plans for the evening and rushed to the venue. I had heard her before at RLKM almost 18 months back and was thoroughly impressed by her vidwat.

The concert opened with all time hit varna viribOni. Vocalist added additional energy into it when she started singing the manodharma chitta swaras at the end of composed swaras. The violin returns were exact imprint of the vocalist. A fast-paced rendition to welcome the Lords above. Indeed, it was well responded by them as there was a brisk 10 minutes rain as an applause from the heaven above. As I mentioned earlier, " when the Gods stop doing their work !!", they were swayed by the class of the concert, and stopped to listen to it with pin drop silence.

A brief outline to ABhOgi, the vocalist dwelled into swaras of srI mahAgaNapate. It was an apt rendition for the evening deviating from the regular hamsadhwani / gaula to invoke lord Ganapathi. Excellent chemistry was demonstrated by the accompanying artists on Violin, Mridanga and ghata. There were many shabhash moments on stage while they complimented each other.

The sub main piece of the concert was all time KalyAni hit of st tyAgarAja nidhi cAla sukhama. Nereval and swaras were demonstrated with utmost ease and tranquility that the song deserved.

I doubt was it an indirect hint to the organisers who meted out a very poor treatment to the whole program.  I could easily take a headcount the audience, while those who made it were those who were updated through word of mouth. I wish to say, Organisers need to use technology to reach out to masses to ensure the hall has a respectable attenandance and respect the vidwat and hard work put in by the artists. Sorry to say Bangalore Gayana Samaja is generations behind the rest. Please wake up !! Your approach is not only doing injustice to the institution, but also to the world of carnatic music.

After a brief filler in nAyaki, Vocalist performed her own composition in valaji. It must be appreciated, that the artist not only has a large repertoire of compositions from the yesteryear masters, she is also a vAggEyakAra in her own right and is using every concert platform to present her compositions. Very rare we get to hear the compositions from its composers.

tOdi, the main rAga for the evening was dealt in complete. The very first opening note was a deviation from the standard takeoff and the whole AlApane came out as completely new. The adage "tOdi eshtu tOdidarU sAladu" became a reality.

The percussion duet that followed the nereval and pretty new phrases for muktAyi, was unbelievably riveting and was worth a standing applause from the audience. The ghata artist matched mridangist in every beat with great ease.

The concluding pieces included a shlOka followed by krishnA nI bEgane bAro and her own tillana composition in Ahir bhairav.

As the evening drifted into silence after a full 3 hour concert, the tunes of the evening are still reverberating. The fortunate ones were present to have an experience of bliss. Hope the organisers do a better job of publicising and using technology to reach out so that the next such monthly concert would have a respectable audience.

Little did I imagine the rush that I encountered during my visits earlier this week for other concerts was an indication of what was in store for me for today. Even though I reached the venue at 5.00 pm well 45 mins ahead of the scheduled start, I was directed to balcony as ALL the seats at ground floor was full !!

Ra Ga sisters started off the concert with an acknowledgement that RLKM was indeed their second home !

Sisters started off with a brisk varna in nATa. Even though Ga announced it as maharAja swAti thirunaL, my reference list indicates a different composer. Your inputs welcome to clarify my confusion is welcome.

dayamAdo ranga which is usually heard in kalyANi or mOhana (and also in hindustAni style) was presented with a unique rasa in rItigauLa. Unbelievable bhakti rasa oozes out when presented in rItigaUla. It should be said that sisters need to present this often to make this version a popular one.

First AlApane came in the form of harikAmbOdhi which was done by Ranjani and followed by uNDEdi rAmuDu. nereval and swaras were brisk and apt to the tempo of the track.

With a sketch of varALi, sisters started of presenting kAmAkshi in a sedate viLamba style. Presented without any elaboarations , it was an apt filler before the grand bhairavi was elaborated.

Both sisters presented elaboration of bhairavi in turns and the feeling was very evocative. rakSha beTTare (which is rarely heard these days) had apt length of nereval and swras.

At this point I must commend the team that had demonstrated their vidwat in each and every opportunity provided. The sound system had the right balance and each instrument could be clearly heard. HN Bhaskar as eloquent as usual, Delhi Sairam first timer in Bangalore, and Omkar Rao.. the one who has quickly matured into a top artists played their roles very aptly.

Audience too made their presence felt with loud applause at appropriate points during the presentation and at the end of each presentation.

AndhOLika filler took the place for the traditional filler as RaGa sisters regularly do before their grand presentation of RTP. It had warmed them up to take up the RTP.

The  RTP started with a very unfamiliar note ( as this rAga is not that often elaborated on stage) .. the clues were evident for me to guess the correct name of the rAga (I have just started learning saraswati rAga krithi BTW in my class). Was very happy to list another "recognisible" raga in my list. In turns they switched and elaborated lalita. The moment they switched, I felt in my 6th sense that they would pick a rAga on pArvati.. and it happened to be durgA. The synchronisation and anticipation they demonstrated when they switched and further elaborated, was creating butterflies in my stomach. Audience acknowledged the demonstration of vidwat with almost frequent after ending of  every sangati.

The grand pallavi was the crescendo of the concert. The way the sisters switched between raga during the closure of swaras was the grand pinnacle of the concert and it almost called for a minute long applause before the mridangist took over for a small tani.

The compositions presented later does not need a mention as I was still sulking in the 3 rAga RTP.

Sisters  overall gave a neat performance. Each concert is better than their previous. Each and every kriti was rendered so well. They are top of the duos today and I see them making it more difficult for other pair to replace them. Once again vidwat's calibre proved by their performance.

Excellent music and Listening pleasure indeed cannot be put in words... with the whole team coming together and egging on each other. Delhi Sairam was seen constantly encouraging and applauding the Ghatam vidwAn

Indeed an evening well spent. This one evening is going to be on my mind for almost next 6 weeks after which I intend to attend the next concert.

A Pause… and a Return

A Pause… and a Return There is something deeply musical about silence. In Carnatic music, we celebrate the aarohana —the ascent, the rise,...
