A Mesmerising Evening of Musical Conversation

There are concerts that one listens to, and then there are concerts that one experiences. The concert by T. M. Krishna, with H. K. Venkatram on violin, K. Arun Prakash on mridangam and Sunil Kumar on the Khanjira, belonged unmistakably to the latter category. It was a deeply absorbing evening in which music seemed to unfold organically, without the feeling of being driven towards a predetermined destination. The four musicians brought together formidable musical experience, individuality and sensitivity, resulting in a performance that was both intellectually stimulating and emotionally compelling. For a rasika, it was the kind of concert in which one gradually stops keeping track of time and simply surrenders to the music.

The opening “Shankari Neeve” in Begada, composed by Subbaraya Shastri and set to Rupaka tala, immediately established the character of the evening. Begada is a raga whose personality can be easily diminished when approached merely as a collection of familiar phrases. In the hands of a sensitive musician, however, its unmistakable grandeur, grace and slightly elusive character emerge naturally. The opening kriti provided a dignified entry into the concert, and the choice of Subbaraya Shastri was itself a lovely reminder of the extraordinary richness of the Carnatic compositional tradition beyond the most frequently performed repertoire.

What followed was a substantial exploration of Purvikalyani, with raga and tana, followed by Tyagaraja's “Chinna Nadena Cheyi” in Kalanidhi, set to Adi tala. The transition from the evocative world of Begada to the expansive emotional territory of Purvikalyani gave the concert an entirely different dimension. Purvikalyani has a naturally searching quality; it can sound luminous one moment and intensely introspective the next. The raga-tana presentation provided the first major opportunity for the evening to breathe expansively, and the subsequent kriti brought the music back from abstraction into the structured world of composition.

The concert then entered one of its most rewarding phases with the Karnataka Devagandhari alapana. This was followed by Tyagaraja's “Sri Tulasamma Mayinta Nelakonavamma” in Karnataka Devagandhari, set to Adi tala. The choice was exquisite. Karnataka Devagandhari possesses a distinctive emotional fragrance, and its appeal lies partly in the subtlety of its identity. It does not demand attention through sheer dramatic force; rather, it draws the listener inward through its gentle, poignant contours. The alapana and the kriti together formed a particularly satisfying musical pairing, allowing the raga to be encountered first in its unrestrained melodic form and then through the composer's carefully fashioned creation.

One of the pleasures of a concert of this calibre is noticing how deliberately the musical landscape changes without ever feeling fragmented. The movement from Karnataka Devagandhari to Kannada Gandhara created precisely such a moment. Another alapana opened up this distinctive raga, followed by “Shankaram Sharanagata Vatsalam” in Kannada Gandhara, an Adi tala composition of R. K. Srikantan's repertoire. Here again, the choice was compelling. Instead of relying entirely on the familiar raga-kriti combinations that dominate many concert programmes, the presentation gave space to less routinely encountered musical colours.

Kannada Gandhara, with its unusual melodic personality, seemed particularly well suited to a concert that valued exploration and listening rather than predictability. The juxtaposition of the two alapana segments—Karnataka Devagandhari and Kannada Gandhara—was one of the programme's most thoughtful features. They demonstrated how two comparatively less commonplace raga worlds can create very different shades of emotion and atmosphere. It was a reminder that the Carnatic tradition is at its most fascinating when its vast repertoire is allowed to breathe.

The tani avartanam that followed brought the rhythmic dimension of the concert into sharp focus. With K. Arun Prakash on mridangam and Sunil Kumar on Khanjira, the percussion combination had an impressive breadth of sonic possibility. The tani was not merely an interlude between the main musical sections; it represented the independent vitality of laya within the larger architecture of the concert. The rhythmic dialogue between mridangam and Khanjira added another layer to an evening that had already moved through several contrasting melodic landscapes.

The post-tani portion took an entirely different turn with the Mirabai bhajan “Savare Aijiyyo Yamuna Kinare” in Mishra Khamaj. This was a particularly natural transition. After the density and sophistication of the preceding Carnatic presentation, the bhajan opened up a more direct devotional space. Mishra Khamaj, with its graceful mixture of classical structure and expressive accessibility, provided an ideal vehicle for this shift. The atmosphere became more intimate, and the devotional character of the composition allowed the music to communicate without the need for elaborate musical architecture.

Then came Papanasam Sivan's “Enna Tavam Seithanai” in Kapi, in Adi tala. This was perhaps one of those moments where the familiar can become newly meaningful. Kapi is a raga of extraordinary emotional versatility, and Papanasam Sivan's composition carries an unmistakable devotional tenderness. Coming after the Mirabai bhajan, the choice created a beautiful continuity of bhava. The concert had moved from the sophisticated architecture of raga and tala towards the more direct language of devotion, but without compromising musical depth.

The final item, “Vaishnava Janato” in Mishra Khamaj, set to Adi tala and attributed to Narsi Mehta, brought the evening to a deeply evocative close. The placement of this bhajan at the conclusion felt particularly apt. It did not attempt to end the concert with a spectacular flourish; instead, it left the listener in a contemplative and devotional space. The final impression was therefore not one of exhaustion after a long musical journey, but of having arrived somewhere quiet and inward.

What made the concert particularly memorable was the way T. M. Krishna's musical personality interacted with the exceptional calibre of his accompanists. H. K. Venkatram is an accompanist with a remarkable ability to inhabit the music rather than merely follow it. The violin becomes a conversational voice, capable of reflecting, complementing and enriching the central melodic line. K. Arun Prakash brings to the mridangam an extraordinary combination of authority and sensitivity, while Sunil Kumar's khanjira added a complementary rhythmic colour to the ensemble.

But perhaps the most important quality of the evening was its sense of musical freedom. There was no impression that the concert was simply moving through a checklist of items. Each raga and composition seemed to have its own space and character. Begada gave way to Purvikalyani; Purvikalyani yielded to Kalanidhi; Karnataka Devagandhari opened another window; Kannada Gandhara offered a less familiar but fascinating landscape; and the final sequence gradually moved towards the devotional intimacy of Mishra Khamaj and Kapi.

This is where Krishna's approach to concert-making becomes particularly engaging. The programme did not seem designed merely to satisfy expectations. Instead, it invited the listener to travel with the musicians. Familiarity and discovery sat comfortably beside each other. The compositions were not simply vehicles to be crossed off a list; they became points of entry into different emotional and musical worlds.

There was also something wonderfully unhurried and contemplative about the overall progression. Even where the music was technically demanding, the larger experience remained spacious. That spaciousness is precious in a concert setting. It allows the rasika to listen not only to the notes but also to the silences, the pauses, the transitions and the subtle changes in mood. The music acquires a life beyond the printed programme.

The programme itself deserves appreciation for its imaginative curation. Beginning with Subbaraya Shastri and moving through Purvikalyani, Kalanidhi, Karnataka Devagandhari, Kannada Gandhara and finally into the world of Mirabai, Papanasam Sivan and Narsi Mehta, it presented Carnatic music not as a rigid succession of standardised items but as a living continuum. There was tradition here, but there was also curiosity. There was scholarship, but there was also spontaneity. Most importantly, there was bhava.

For me, the concert was an unequivocal 10/10 listening experience. The rating is not simply a comment on technical excellence—which, at this level of musicianship, almost goes without saying. It is a reflection of something more difficult to quantify: the ability of music to hold one's attention completely, to provoke thought, to evoke emotion and ultimately to leave a residue that remains long after the final note has disappeared.

A memorable concert need not necessarily overwhelm. Sometimes its greatness lies in the manner in which it quietly occupies the mind. This evening did exactly that. The ragas continued to linger, the compositions acquired renewed resonance, and the interplay between melody and rhythm remained vivid in memory.

In an age where the temptation can sometimes be to measure a concert by the number of items, the length of an alapana or the brilliance of a particular swara sequence, this performance offered a more enduring measure: Did the music make you listen? Did it make you feel? Did it make you think? Did it leave you wanting to hear it again?

The answer, unequivocally, was yes.

It was a rich, refined, evocative and deeply satisfying evening of Carnatic music—one where four accomplished musicians created not merely a concert, but a sustained musical conversation. And for those fortunate enough to have been present, it was the kind of evening that one does not simply remember as having attended; one remembers it as having lived through the music.

A couple of years back, after being bitten by the travel + shutter bug travelled to Jog Falls (after seeing innumerable number of photos online) to have a glimpse of the nature and the feel of gush of water down the 253 meter fall. However, to my disappointment, could see only a stream of water flowing through the fall which was no bigger than my rain water drain in my roof top. It was depleted off its grandeur on that particular day!

I summarize my experience of yesterday's TM Krishna concert to something similar, albeit at a different scale.

On my way back, I was second guessing myself, was it the right time to visit the place. Though I had a mixed feeling on that day, at least for the drive all the way from Bangalore on smooth tarmac, A similar day saver for yesterday was HK Venkatram, and percussion duo of K Arun Prakash and Anirudh Atreya.

The inaugural concert at 39th Gokulashtami celebrations of SGBS Trust at Unnati began with a housefull (+ stagefull) audience packed at least 30 mins before the scheduled start of the evening affair. Though there was no mikasura appearance, a miniature form was the sound engineer assistant who could not differentiate between mid high (frequencies) with Mid / High Frequencies. That was a light moment at the beginning of the concert while the sound was being adjusted. Unbelievably all the setup was completed in much lesser time as compared to quite elaborate (loss of time) that I have experienced.

A small sketch of kApinArAyaNi paved way for the full flourished sarasa sAma dAna. While TM Krishna focused on neraval embellishments, HK Venkatram led the way in swara elaboration. The detailed affair brought out the best what one could deliver for KApi nArAyaNi.

The sedate zone of the concert started with an elaborate AlApane of bEgaDe, through some detailed and exquisite phrases being leisurely  delivered. There was no confusion of any sort in recognizing what was being presented. A padam "yArukkakilum bhayama" by subbarAma Iyer aptly fit into the sedate mood set up during the AlApane. Its a tamil composition that fit the bill for a large Tamil speaking audience who were able to appreciate the emotions of the nAyaki to her nAyaka expressed in this composition. TMKs recent experiences of singing for dance performance must have helped him to pace it at ati ati viLamba kAla presentation. The voice co-operated well to stretch to 3 octaves bringing the best of bEgaDe during kalpana swaras.
One gentleman behind another friend of mine had started snoring in a matching madra shruti. Can't blame him for the situation. May be he was in bEgaDe trance.

To our dismay, I believe the chit that was passed on to the artists, requested for bEgaDe (concluded based on the facial expression of all the 3 main artists who saw the chit) , which was indeed obliged !!!!!

tAna was elaborate and was well paced. I had started picking up the feeling of "bEgaDe overdose" but had to sit on.. Waiting for something more special to be offered. After the first 2 - 3 notes, TMK verified with others to check if that was what requested for ?? The tAna flourished in all possible directions bringing out the complete swarUpa of the rAga. It was followed up by "vallabha nAyakasya" which brought in pace back to the concert.

chANAro (devoid from previous presentation on jANAro or was my ears in a different state of mind .. don’t know) brought out the best of the emotions khamAs could pack in for a jAvaLi.

MukhAri AlApane took everyone for a roller coaster ride. With my limited music gyan, recognized the first phrases to be near mAnji, while my (more learned than me) music friend VS who was seated next to me recognized the initial phrases to be around bhairavi. Then came a more distinct mukhAri chAya that stood with me for quite some time. Both Raga and tAna were dealt in detail. HK Venkatram returns to the vocalist was a treat to ears.

The pallavi line with almost translates to "Let us all love this exalted human existence" may have been inspired by vocalist's recent award which has raised eye brows for all the controversial citation was presented. The rAgamAlika came in the pallavi line presentation that as swaras, which was a refreshing change to the routine swara rAgamAlika

HK Venkatram who was asked to present whatever was on his mind, took up lilting rItigauLa. In the same mood, TM Krishna took up a fast paced cEra rAva dEmira. Aligning to his usual experiment of ending the concert with a pretty grand krithi, I expected it to be the last delivery of the day. However, there was more confusion ensuing our way.

kAMbOdhi / harikAmbOdhi duel kept running in my mind ( seems like even the organizers fell trapped to this as seen in their initial report on their FB page which was later amended - My comments on their page has been deleted too !!) as the next he govinda he gOpAla was presented

A fast paced mIrA bhajan was presented as the conclusion of the concert.

As I walked out of the hall, was wondering about a coughing kid right behind me at the concert hall. A budding mridangist, he has been coughing since last 4 years as I get to see him only at Unnati, and I wondered how is he still alive, with cough not getting cured !

As I mentioned earlier, a tougher 75 is not as appreciated as an easy 100* in cricket, this concert had individually and masterly presented pieces. However, at the end, was not able to get a completeness feeling as I left the concert hall at 21.15. May be because, I have attended far better concert of this artist!

Why I skipped my dinner yesterday ?

Reached the venue pretty early to get a front row seat to listen to Vid. T M Krishna @ Seshadripuram Education Trust premises. Pretty hot day had heated the granite floor below and it was unbearable initially.

Junior concert rendered by Meghana Moorthy and team was delivering a Saveri piece at its fag end. The assembled audience were entertained to some good music till 6.30 , 15 mins beyond the schedule closing time for the junior concert.

As we kept waiting, the artists who had the first taste of deteriorating traffic conditions. The concert started at 7.10 almost 40 mins beyond schedule. However, that did not deter the plans of TM Krishna and his team.

He started with a heavy pice of Sri Krishnam Bhaja mAnasa, and it was made heavier with 3 sets of neraval. Every time Krishna brings up KRISHNOVATION, and I'm not tired of looking forward for it. It was presented in sedentary pace. During swara prastAra, he traversed ati mandra Ni to tara Ni. As the voice co-operated, it was a treat for the audience. He was in full swing within the very first 15 mins of the concert. A short percussion duet that followed added more luster to the already shining piece. As predictably, the affair lasted 30+ minutes. The highlight was 3 Neravals in this piece.

1 madhyama kala niraval at vENugAna lOla and 2nd at pankajAsanAdi dEva mahitam. Violnist came out of his shell and traversed through the scale to bring out essence of tODi. The 3rd neraval was at duritha kAla at pankajadala. Excellant mandra sthAyi swarAs at pallavi line. Arun Praksh's gentle touches added beauty during swara kalpana.

TMK completed the song with mandra stAyi swarAs. Did not venture to medium and duritha. This left a great impact on rasikAs. Mini percussion duet added beauty. 3 niravals slow swaras at pallavi and entire song in meditative madhyama kAla and short tani(duet) what else u want. Krishna if u hive such varieties, we are with u.

khamAs jAvaLi he gave lot of surprises, pleasant one. He started the jAvaLi with AlApane. The very first phrase was typical khamAs. But the pharse ended with bit jarring, completely unexpected, Wondering what happened? This was when micAsura appeared. Then he asked audience if it sounded loud. YEEEEESSSSSS came the reply. Understood he was disturbed by audio system.

When we thought we are for a grand khamas AlApana , He switched to rapid tAna and again when the tAna was moving to climax ge moved to javali. When javali was in a steady flow he switched to rapid swara kalpanA. Percussion team provided elegant support. Completely different approach than tODi by them. Violinist was also equally impressive. Beautifully garlanded swaras added to poetic melody of the composition detailed enough for a 13 mins presentation.

Normally, when a vidwAn takes such quick unexpected changes rasikAs will be upset. But tAna overtook rAga AlApane. Then jAvaLi overtook tAna and finally swaras overtook all of them. So all changes turned out to be pleasant and better than the previous one.

SahAna was the first AlApane of the evening and it was essayed neatly and detailed. It was so complete, I was wondering whether it would be presented as a piece by itself! However, Vid HK Venkatram, presented an equally brilliant manOdharma to raise it to heights. TM Krishna in this AlApana was bit offtrack. Infact he is one of few front line vidhwans who sketches raga swarUpa in first pharse itself during AlApane. But the first phrase was bit confusing. As he recognised this, he announced the rAga name sahAna. Then he took off. with many circles of repetitions. Expanse came at a cost of repetitions. It could have been crisp. But violin returns were very crisp. filtered one. Violinist scored over krishna in sahAna AlApana. Overall enjoyable 17 mins of AlApane. There was substantial clue of sangatis in his presentation, that it would be followed by Giripai.

mandra stAyi sangathis and notes were again a magic. His sangatis and long glides at composer mudra"tyagaraja" was again a good effort. As a concert is a joint team work, it was amply evident when ever krishna gave lot of breaks that were duly and intelligently filled by Violinist and percussion team. Another detailed presentation of krithi with all necessary nereval embellishments to make the composition presentation wholesome throughout the 15 mins of presentation.

Very last year, in the same venue, mikAsura had appeared from nowhere, and Krishna had to leave the dias to drop by the sound engineer's system to make adjustments. However, this time though there were traces, he demonstrated high level of patience to interact with the sound engineer to get it adjusted. There was long period of HUM in the audio system.

This good mood continued into gaULa AlApane, dwelled in detailed essaying all possible passages. gaULa AlApane - the very first hum and pharse indicated clearly it is gaULa, but TM Krishna also announced the rAga. There was a sumptuous trace of tAna like presentation, though it was just AlApane. Don't know how the 12 mins passed by. The team presented another detailed, embellished and improvised version of tyAgarAja pAlayAshumAm. The highlight is  anthara sancharAs. No violin return, but gave ample space to  HK Venkatram to exhibit his class. tyAgarAja in praise of lord siva of thiruvArur, the neraval and swara at srI guruguha was very soothing to ears. HK Venktram started his neraval with lovely glide at lolam, was a treat to the ears.

The drift into tani was damn smooth and it did not appear as a stand alone piece. Vid Arun Prakash has a trademark presentation skills during kriti v/s during tani. Vid S Krishna too demonstrated strong rhytmic and aesthetic controls during both phases of the concert. 16 mins of kriti and 13 mins of tani made this the main piece of the concert.

With a brief outline of Kharaharapriya, pakkala nilabadi (providing sufficient clue that it would be the last and heavy piece for the day- trademark Krishna way of ending the concert) was presented in apt pace without any hurry. 14 mins presentation with nerval indicates the leisurely pace at which it was presented.

By the end of tani, the team had received good amount of chit request. He said he would honour them. To the delight of the audience, the concert continued for another 20 mins presenting the pieces of mAND and dEsh. mAND had swara added to increase the glory of dancing krishna as beautifully imagined by kanaka dAsa. swaras on violin was another demonstration of brilliance by HK Venkatram.

Baro krishnayya - we would have heard so many times. But KRISHNOVATION was kalapana swara at dhimdhimi dhimdhimi which added beauty to often heard song. Bangalore rasikAs should sing "baro( tm) krishnayya" if TM Krishna elevates even a tail piece to such classic level.

While it was the first concert for me listening in a sqauatted seating position after my recent ankle surgery, It made me to forget the pain that I was enduring. Overall, through the evening we were fed with majestic rAgas, and in a great mood. It had quenched the thirst and hunger in this mortal body. And now you know why I skipped my dinner yesterday.

One would (in recent times) go to TMK concert to see what new can be done during the performance and its only a matter of time when the surprises / Krishnovation starts rolling out.

In this case the jampacked hall at 5.45 was treated to the first surprise when the curtains rolled up. TM Krishna was seated to the side while the Violinist sat next to him like a  jugalbandi performance.

The voice tests that had begun at 5.30 itself indicated the depth and holding of the voice ... indicating a real treat to the audience.

An announcement was made on the launch of the second version of his book later in March at Bangalore before the start of the concert.

Concert started with a sedate long haul krithi in ravichandrika. While I have always heard the faster version of this krithi, in this case rasikas were treated to understand how melodious the same krithi can be when it is delivered in a sedate mode.

The second surprise came with the tODi AlApane. Expecting a krithi... it TM Krishna turned into tAna. The rAga was explored to its depth apt to the kannaDa anecdote "tOduttA tOdutta tODi.. indicating .. you can dig as deep as you want in tODi". A 27 minute teat of tODi had made the day for me. How can i know.. what more surprises were in store for me ? tODi was explored to greater depths during nereval and swaras. He asked the violinist to lead rAgamAlika swaras.. She took up varALi as the first rAga. Violinist who was almost a shadow till now demonstrated her talent exploring varALi. TMK followed the suit. The next raga elaborated ..??

Chinna nAdena came in as a filler with even more chinna swaras before a chinna tani that followed it. Many (bad customs at Bangalore) who wanted to leave after tani were dissappointed to know that tani came in so early !!.

Trademark experiment of standalone AlApane came in form of pUrvikalyANi. Realised that after he switched over to mAnjhi alapane. I was scratching my head to understand which composition has these 2 rAgas.

varugalAmO was presented in ati tIvra viLamba  kAla. Strikers and non strikers were searching here and there to strike or two, but it was a real test between the brains. The violinist turned out to be winner following TM Krishna in each of his sancharas.

It was already 2 hrs into the concert by now. Was (not) expecting a main considering Krishna's approach to concert and now that RTP was already delivered. But the third surprise came in. This time it was dhanyAsi (janya of tODi .. right after a tODi in the same concert)

mIna lOchana brova.. delivered with utmost divinity.. I had sAkshAtkAra of mInAkshi amma right in the concert hall. The main tani followed for around 18 mins after nereval and swaras.

Expecting Krishna to wind up on time was the wrong thing I did. Good 10 minute presentation of shAnti nilava vENDum ended with a good applause.

Viruttum on mAte Ambika was presented in grand style . Each rAga name finding a place at the end of each stanza provided enough evidence of guessing the raga name right.

Obvious  conclusion to a viruttum on the last rAga.. tirupati venkaTa ramana ninagEtake bArado karuNa .... was presented. This must have sounded like the last song of the concert as it was almost 8.55 (Scheduled end time is 8.45).

But Krishna after sifting through his notes... decided to end the concert differently. Those who had left by now would be in for an unbelievable surprise.

Me too.. I was taken aback when he started kharaharapriyA alApana which lasted almost 3 minutes in as grand style as it could be in such short span of time. I was expecting a small composition, but Krishna took up pakkala nilabaDi from anupallavi. It was going to be one grand ending. nereval added additional salt to the surprises that were already delivered. Swaras too followed.

kalyANAdbhutAya gAtrAya.. followed in kharaharapriya and indicated an end to a grand 3.5 hrs of concert. A treat to watch and listen.

Blessed are those who had an opportunity to witness TM Krishna in great form.
